FAQs - Do I need a registered agent?

Pennsylvania does not require a registered agent to be declared on a business record.

Instead of a registered agent, all business entities in Pennsylvania must have a registered office address. The registered office address must be a physical PA address. It cannot be a P.O. Box alone.

A registered agent, as it relates to a PA business record, typically refers to a third-party service company that charges a fee to use their address as the registered office address on a PA business record. Using a registered agent can help protect your home address if you have a home-based business or is useful for out-of-state businesses that do not have a physical location in PA.

If a third-party service company is used to file an initial filing, they often bundle their registered agent services together with the registration process.

Removing the Registered Agent

If you need to remove the third party registered agent from the business record, you must update the registered office address. The new registered office address must be a physical address verifiable through the United States Post Office . An individual name is not required to be provided with the registered office address.

For assistance with updating a business address, refer to the Update a Business Address help guide.
